Six Categories, One Company
Albetuck handles the dirt work from raw wooded lot to finished building pad, across the Outer Banks and northeastern North Carolina. Six service categories under one roof means one call, one contract and one company standing behind the work. Everything below is done in-house with our own equipment and our own material.
01 / 06
We clear wooded lots, overgrown property and construction sites down to workable ground. Trees, stumps, underbrush and debris come out, and the site gets left ready for whatever comes next — a house pad, a driveway, a septic field or just usable yard. Lot sizes run from a single residential parcel to multi-acre tracts, and we handle the haul-off so you are not left with a burn pile. If you are clearing land to build, we can carry the same job straight through grading and site prep.
02 / 06
Forestry mulching grinds standing brush and small trees into a mulch layer right where they stand, in a single pass. There is no burning, no hauling and no stump holes left behind, and the mulch layer holds soil in place instead of leaving bare dirt to wash. It is usually the faster and cheaper route when you want land opened up rather than stripped to bare ground. We use it for trails, fence lines, pasture reclamation and selective clearing where you want certain trees left standing.
03 / 06
Septic is the second half of this business and one of the biggest jobs we do — Clay’s father built F&H on it and we have installed systems across this coast ever since. We install complete new systems, from tank set through drain field and distribution lines, and we handle the excavation ourselves rather than subbing it out. On the Outer Banks, water table and soil conditions decide what will actually pass and what will fail, and knowing that ground is the difference between a system that works and one that gets dug up twice. We coordinate the county permitting and required inspections.
04 / 06
Site work is everything between a cleared lot and a buildable one. We cut and compact house pads, grade for drainage, build driveways and access roads, and trench and install underground utilities. This is the category Clay means when he says the business goes start to finish — a builder can hand us a raw parcel and get back a site that is ready for a foundation. We work directly with homeowners, general contractors and builders across the Outer Banks.
05 / 06
We take down structures and clear what is left. Houses, outbuildings, slabs, concrete and pools come out, and the debris gets hauled off the same job rather than sitting on your property waiting for a second contractor. Because we also do clearing and grading, a demolition job can go straight into a finished, graded site without a handoff. Residential and commercial work both.
06 / 06
We run our own sand pit, which is not something most contractors on this coast can say. That means sand, fill dirt, gravel, crusher run and driveway stone come from our own material and our own trucks, delivered on your schedule. If we are already on your job doing clearing or site work, material shows up with the crew instead of on a supplier’s timeline. We can spread and grade it on site as well as drop it.
About Us
Clay Newbern grew up on the back of his father’s equipment. F&H Land Development started in the 1980s and handled site work, land clearing and septic across northeastern North Carolina, and Clay was working in it by the time he was five years old, Clay carried the same work forward under his own name and opened Albetuck Land Development in December 2021. Same ground, same standards, same crews who know which lots hold water and which ones do not.
Today a team of six to seven runs land clearing services, forestry mulching, septic installation, site work, demolition and material hauling out of Jarvisburg. Albetuck also operates its own sand pit, which means sand, rock and fill dirt come off your job at your schedule instead of a supplier’s. Nothing on your property is too small or too big to look at, and Clay will tell you honestly if a job is not worth doing. That is the whole reason the phone has kept ringing on word of mouth alone for four decades.
Nothing Too Small. Nothing Too Big.
How It Works
Every job runs the same way, whether it is a single wooded lot in Kitty Hawk or a full site package for a new build. You will know what is happening and who is on your property at every stage.
Step 01
Call or send us your address and we come look at the property in person. You get a firm number, not a range, and there is no charge for the visit. If the job is not something we should be doing, we will tell you that too.
Step 02
Septic systems and some site work need county approval before a machine touches the dirt. We handle the paperwork side and coordinate the required inspections so nothing stalls halfway through. You get a start date once approvals are in hand.
Step 03
We bring our own equipment and our own material. Because we run a sand pit, fill dirt, sand and rock arrive when the crew does, instead of waiting on a third-party delivery window. Access routes and staging get set before work starts.
Step 04
The crew works the plan you approved. Clearing, mulching, excavation, septic, pads and utilities are all handled in-house, so there is no gap where you are chasing three different contractors to coordinate with each other. You get progress updates as the job moves.
Step 05
Debris is hauled off or mulched on site, grades get finished, and we walk the property with you before we pull off. Anything that is not right gets fixed before the final invoice. Payment is cash, check, or card through our system.
Why Albetuck
This coast is not ordinary dirt. Water table, sand, and what a lot does after a storm all change what will work on your property, and there is no substitute for having dug it before. Clay has been on these jobs since the 1980s, first with his father’s company and now with his own.
Clearing, mulching, septic, grading, utilities, demolition and material all come from us. You are not coordinating four contractors and refereeing when their schedules collide. One number to call and one company answering for the whole job.
Our own sand pit and our own trucks mean sand, rock and fill dirt are not a line item we mark up and wait on. Material arrives when the crew does. On a coast where delivery delays are routine, that alone moves timelines.
A single stump or a full site package for a new build both get a real estimate and a real crew. Small jobs are not treated as favors to be squeezed in whenever, and large jobs do not get subbed out to someone you never met.
Albetuck has run on referrals alone since 2021, with no website and no advertising. In a market Clay describes as overrun with lowballers, work that keeps coming back by name is the only reputation worth having. Ask around Currituck and Dare County.
Service Area
Albetuck runs land clearing services, septic installation and site work from our home base in Jarvisburg out across Currituck, Dare and Pasquotank counties. That covers the full Outer Banks strip from Corolla down to Hatteras, plus the mainland communities west of the sound.
Questions
Pricing depends on the property. Tree size, access and soil all change the number, which is why we walk the lot before we quote it.
Cost depends on system type, soil and water table conditions, and how much excavation the site needs. On the Outer Banks, soil conditions vary enough from lot to lot that a real number requires seeing the property — conventional systems and engineered systems for difficult sites are not close in price. Larger systems for multi-bedroom homes run considerably higher than a standard residential install. We give firm pricing after a site visit, and the estimate is free.
The county has to approve the system before any dirt moves, which means a soil evaluation and a permit. Once that is in hand, we excavate, set the tank, install the distribution box and lay the drain field lines, then backfill and grade the site back. Required inspections happen at set points along the way. We handle the excavation ourselves rather than subbing it, which is usually where scheduling falls apart on these jobs.
The two things that move the price most are how heavily wooded the lot is and what you want left behind. An acre of light brush is a fraction of an acre of mature hardwood with stumps that need pulling and hauling. Forestry mulching is often cheaper than full clearing because nothing has to be trucked off the property. We walk the lot and give you a firm number at no cost.
Forestry mulching grinds vegetation into mulch where it stands, in one pass, with no burning and no hauling. Traditional clearing removes trees, stumps and debris from the property entirely and leaves bare ground. Mulching is usually faster and less expensive, and the mulch layer helps hold soil against erosion. If you are putting in a foundation or a septic field you generally want full clearing; if you just want the land opened up and usable, mulching is normally the better value.
The lot gets cleared, then graded so water runs away from the structure instead of toward it. A building pad is cut and compacted to the elevation the plans call for, access for the driveway goes in, and underground utilities get trenched and installed. Septic and well placement is decided at this stage too, since it affects everything else on the lot. We do all of it in-house, so one crew carries the site from wooded to buildable.
Yes, and we haul it from our own sand pit rather than sourcing it from a supplier. That covers sand, fill dirt, gravel, crusher run and driveway stone, in bulk loads for residential and commercial jobs. We can spread and grade material on site instead of just dropping a pile. If we are already on your property doing clearing or site work, the material comes with the crew.
Both. A single stump, one load of gravel or a small lot gets the same free estimate and the same crew as a full site package. Albetuck’s average job runs larger than that, but small work is how most of our long-term customers found us in the first place. If a job is genuinely not worth doing, we will tell you honestly rather than pad an estimate.
